It’s the most wonderful time of the year – especially in Glasgow. There’s something really special about Christmas time in my city, and this year I wanted to share another round of suggestions for things to do in Glasgow at Christmas. There’s always plenty going on in Glasgow, but it really comes alive at Christmas, with countless shows, markets and plenty of good food and drink to be had across the city. I’ve touched a bit on where to do your Christmas shopping in Glasgow, but I wanted to expand on that and bring in some more of the experiences that are taking place around the city, instead of just the shops… as much as I love shopping! It’s the time of year to spend time with those you love, and here are some great ways to spend your time in the run-up to the biggest day of the year (that isn’t my birthday).
This year, Glasgow’s Christmas Markets have a new organiser at the helm, and whilst on the surface you might not be able to tell, the experience as a whole is a lot more enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I always love the novelty of the Christmas markets, but this year there’s just a lot more space and the whole thing flows better as a whole. There’s a brilliant selection of stalls on offer – including some unmissable dutch pancakes – and you really could spend an afternoon or an evening taking it all in. The classic M&D’s Big Wheel has taken its place overlooking George Square and is the best place to take in the festive atmosphere enveloping the whole square. Grab some mulled wine (or even some delicious mulled cider) and one of the bars in George Square and St Enoch Square before meandering around the stalls taking in the wonderful sights – and smells!
See a Show
If you fancy something a tad more traditional, however, you’re spoilt for choice. The Kings has the classic Sleeping Beauty, starring no other than Elaine C Smith, as their leading act this panto season and you can catch Jack and the Beanstalk with my favourite Greg McHugh at the SEC. The front-runner for me this year has to be Alice in Weegieland at Tron, which sounds absolutely fantastic.
Although I touched on some of the upcoming markets in my guide to where to shop in Glasgow this Christmas I’ve since discovered a few more worth mentioning! You can find a good craft fair most weekends in Glasgow, but the Christmas season brings them in an abundance. Tea Green are hosting their brilliant Kibble Palace Market this weekend, and Wasp Studios have an artists and makers market on at The Briggait too. There are Christmas Craft Fairs running every weekend until the 24th over in Merchant Square, so you’re covered for last minute shopping frenzies too. The BAaD Christmas Market is on the 17th and I’m really looking forward to heading along for a nosey, plus if I have some time this weekend I might try pay the German Christmas Fair at WEST On The Green a visit!
Catch a film
One of my favourite things to do at Christmas in Glasgow is head to Glasgow Film Theatre to see It’s A Wonderful Life. It’s basically a Christmas tradition. At this time of year, the films on offer at the cinema are usually pretty decent (Star Wars, anyone?) and I love nothing more than spending a dark night indulging in a cinema date. Heading to Glasgow Film Theatre makes things feel a little bit more special than your bog-standard multiplex visit, so it’s well worth a visit for a festive treat in the run-up to Christmas.
Or failing that, just grab some mulled wine and cosy up in one of our many brilliant bars and restaurants. That never fails this time of year! Tis the season to be merry, after all. I for one just love hanging about in the city centre soaking up the atmosphere. There’s something about Christmas lights and buskers singing a festive tune that brings a smile to my face.
