I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that I very rarely spend any time in Glasgow’s burgeoning south side. Sure, I’ve spent plenty of time trawling through beautiful Shawlands flats on Right Move, or admiring their thriving foodie scene whilst scrolling through my Instagram feed, but actually checking it out for myself is something that I’ve yet to achieve. I’ve started off well though, with a Monday night trip to Black Dove on Kilmarnock Road kicking off my week in the perfect way. Having recently launched a brand new menu, Black Dove boasts a brilliant selection of stylish small plates to suit any appetite. Each dish is cooked to order, with the quality screaming through each bite. The selection of small plates on offer allows customers to experience a whole host of flavours in one evening, which is something I love. I’m a huge fan of tapas style eating, with Black Dove being no different.
I was invited along to a fantastic launch evening for the new menu, where I got to taste some of the new highlights and old favourites as well as putting their cocktail (well, mocktail) menu to the test. I love grabbing a bite to eat whilst catching up with some of my favourite Glasgow bloggers, and when the menu arrived in my inbox the day of the launch I knew it was set to be a brilliant evening. I always love to spend all day dreaming about the food I’m going to eat that night, which may be building myself up for disappointment when I’m the one doing the cooking, but I certainly was not disappointed with Black Dove. I’ve already told Paddy that we need to have a date night here when he’s next home in Glasgow!
Our tasting menu featured five dishes – starting with a Pork Belly Scotch Egg served with Chorizo Jam, then the Ox Cheek Steak Pie with deliciously creamy mashed potato, followed by a Baked Hake Fillet which I sat out, then Slow Cooked Beef Rendang before finishing with Lamb Rump – all of which were beautiful. The levels of freshness served up by the kitchen are apparent at first bite, with all of the dishes combining a variety of flavours to create a delectable meal.
The absolute highlight of the dishes, for me, had to be the Pork Belly Scotch Egg with the Chorizo Jam and Apple Salad. I’ve been dreaming about that chorizo jam ever since and am desperate to have some more in my life. Chorizo is basically my favourite food, so this sweet but smokey sauce was the stuff of dreams for me. Ugh, I’m drooling just thinking about it now.
Unfortunately, I missed desserts, which I regret to this very day. Any excuse to go back, right? What I didn’t miss out on, however, was their delicious drinks menu. Although I couldn’t drink I made the most of their fruity mocktails on the night and felt right at home. I love cocktails so I hate when I have to turn them down, but having a softer option made my night! Next time I’ll be leaving the car at home so I can taste some of the hard stuff, with the “Shawlands Sling” being very high up on my list.
I think, in the future, I’d like to live in Shawlands and knowing that I’d have restaurants like Black Dove on my doorstep if I ever did move south of the river makes it even more likely. This is a brilliant establishment in the Glasgow food scene and well worth making the short journey south side for, even if it just for that chorizo jam. Mmmm, there I go thinking about it again. A must visit!
