I used to read the Harry Potter series from start to finish every summer, but for some reason it’s been a good few years since I last undertook the task. When trying to decide on a book for the latest Sassy Books Blogger Book Club Hayley and I thought it would be a nice trip down memory lane to revisit one of our childhood favourites.
If you don’t know what Harry Potter and the Philospher’s Stone is about – hi, where have you been for the past 19 years? – then I’ll quickly sum it up for you. Harry is not-so-blissfully unaware of the fact that he is a bit of a celebrity in the wizarding world, or that a wizarding world even exists, so when a bumbling giant appears to rescue him from his miserable life with his aunt & uncle it all comes as a bit of a shock. The Philosopher’s Stone follows Harry’s first year at the infamous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he faces some unexpected challenges with his new found friends and skills.
I loved diving back in to the world of Hogwarts, and re-reading The Philosopher’s Stone just reminded me how much I love these books. They are so much better than the films, giving you a deeper understanding of the key characters, their relationships and the world itself. Plus, the books don’t miss out KEY PLOT ELEMENTS like Peeves. Ugh, that will never not annoy me. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that if you haven’t already read the books and you loved the films then you better hop to it. Meanwhile, I’m off to re-read the rest of the series and mope about the rest of the important things they missed in the movies. Then I’ll re-watch the movies, obviously.
This is usually the part where we announce the next book for the book club, but after chatting Hayley and I have decided that we’re going to take a little break for a while. Sassy Books seems to have lost momentum, and we both have a really busy month ahead, so it makes sense to take some time off whilst we figure out the future direction. Keep an eye on our Twitter for updates and be sure to check out the hashtag to see everyone else’s reviews in the mean time!
