If the awful situation ever arose where I had to pick just one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, I think Mexican would probably be a good contender, alongside Italian, Thai, Chinese, Spanish… Let’s just hope I never face this situation, because that is one tough decision. Although Glasgow has a fair few chain restaurants, we only have one Mexican chain and that’s Chiquito, not that I’m complaining!
Back in February Chiquito added some new dishes to their menu, with the delicious sounding Pina Colada Prawns and Spiced Coconut Chicken being just a couple of the mouthwatering additions. At the weekend I headed over to Glasgow Fort with my usual partner in crime, Paddy, to try out a few bits from the new menu after a spot of shopping (obviously). Despite it being a busy Saturday night we were seated straight away and left to work our way through the menus.
I’m the kind of person who always checks out the menu before visiting a restaurant, regardless of if I’ve visited before or not, so after investigating the refreshed Chiquito menu I had my eye on a fair few things already. My indecisiveness is becoming a running theme here… oops. Anyway, being a big fan of tapas the Street Food selection was at the forefront of my mind, but choosing between the options was a bit of problem.
To start, we decided to do our usual and share a portion of the Fully Loaded Nachos topped with Spicy Chicken and it was an absolute winner for us. Paddy and I like to think that nachos are one of our specialities, and we can be very particular about how we like them, however we’re both in firm agreement that the nachos from Chiquito are the best we’ve had outside of our own kitchens. That’s a pretty impressive feat! The Fully Loaded Nachos are supposed to serve 2-4 people, but we demolished nearly the entire plate so I think it would be suited to three people at most, unless you have a very small appetite which we don’t – you might have guessed.
For his main, Paddy chose to have the Southern Fried Chicken topped with Barbecue Pulled Pork which he thoroughly enjoyed. I managed to steal a little nibble and it was the perfect combination of tender meat packed full of flavour. It was a pretty substantial portion too, which is never a bad thing!
After lots of deliberation, as well as a few recommendations from our lovely waitress, I finally settled on my three choices from the Street Food selection. These plates come in at 3 for £12.95 or 6 for £23.95 but as they were on the smaller side I think you’d definitely need to consider having a starter or a side to accompany them. My choices ended up being the Pan Fried Chorizo, Crispy Chicken Tacos and the fried Halloumi Bites with a delicious cranberry salsa. The tacos weren’t as flavourful as I would have liked, but the chorizo and the Halloumi bites were gorgeous! I think next time I’ll try out the Whipped Feta & Honey, Sweet Chorizo Croquettes and the Tortilla Stack. I’d definitely recommend trying the new Street Food menu if you want to sample a few things at once, something I’m always up for.
As per usual, Chiquito didn’t disappoint. I can’t say I’ve ever had a bad experience at any of their restaurants and the friendly, attentive staff at their Glasgow Fort branch made it a real delight. Next time I’ll be sure to make sure I’m not the designated driver so I can sample some of their extensive cocktail menu!
