Being the owner of thick, coarse curls I feel like I’m constantly battling against frizz. Flyaways are the bane of my life and for so long I felt like a walking ball of fuzz – especially when the typical Scottish weather likes to flip between seasons on an hourly basis! I’ve finally managed to nail a few simple steps that really make a difference when it comes to getting rid of frizzy hair.
With so many hair products available out there it can be difficult to figure out what’s best for you and your hair type. When it comes to frizz, one of the best ways to fight it is with moisturising shampoos and conditioners, with no alcohol and lots of protein. I’ve been using the John Frieda Frizz Ease range for years now and despite occasionally straying away to try other brands I always end up returning. One of my absolute favourite products from the range has to be the Dream Curls styling spray which is one of my haircare heroes that I’ve been stashing for a good few years now. Ingredients to look out for include coconut, almond, banana and also silicone – these will provide the much needed moisture and protection your hair needs.
Frizzy hair is often prone to breakage, especially if it’s too dry. It’s not always the most practical time wise, but if you have the time to let your hair dry naturally then it makes a huge difference. Otherwise I would recommend that you stick to drying just the roots of your hair, being careful not to over-dry, which maintains lift without drying out the ends of the hair too. A handy thing to have in your arsenal is a diffuser which helps to limit the amount of heat applied to your hair directly. If you’re using a towel try to squeeze the water out instead of ferociously rubbing – like I used to be very guilty of! Investing in an absorbent microfibre towel makes it a lot easier and they’re not all that expensive.
As important as it is to treat yo’ self, it’s also very important to treat you hair! I try to use some sort of deep conditioning treatment at least once a week to keep it in tip top condition, and I make sure to load up on nourishing hair treatments that I can apply every time I wash and style my hair. Heat protection is a must have for any type of hair and I like to make sure that any other products I put in my hair have an element of heat protection included – another reason I love the John Frieda Dream Curls styling spray! As well as this, I like to use a lot of oil based treatments in my hair to add extra moisture to my dry ends. I’ve heard great things about using Coconut Oil to treat frizzy hair but as of yet I haven’t tried it, at the moment I use Avon’s Argan Oil, another one of my long term favourites, and apply a generous amount to the ends after washing. If my hair’s feeling particularly dry I’ll apply it to dry hair and leave it to soak in overnight.
Okay – it might sound a bit extravagant at first – but silk pillowcases make an incredible amount of difference when it comes to fighting frizz. By reducing the friction between your hair and the pillowcase it reduces my poodle-esque bed head and apparently helps fight wrinkles too. My baby face can’t confirm this, but it’s worth a shot right? Satin pillowcases help too and are a bit easier to care for, but can get a bit warm so if you prefer a cool pillow then look for 100% silk. They’re by no means cheap, but they won’t break the bank either and you can get some good deals over on Amazon!
Yep. Put it down. Brushing dry hair only encourages breakage and frizz, exactly what we don’t want for our precious locks. If you insist on brushing your hair only do so when damp, but ideally you need a wide toothed comb to get those knots out. If you’re a finger-comber like me it helps if you slightly dampen your fingers beforehand, making it easier to get through the hair without breaking it. You’ll thank me later!
