5 Favourite Festive Films

10 Must Watch Christmas Films | Colours and Carousels - Scottish Lifestyle, Beauty and Fashion blog

Christmas weekend is finally upon us and it's pretty safe to say that the weather is more than a tad frightful - particularly in Glasgow! Storm Barbara has come to visit just in time for Christmas, which makes the perfect excuse to curl up on the couch with a festive film or two. Although I'm working for the next two days (Christmas in retail, woohoo), I'm so excited to spend my evenings catching up with some of my favourite Christmas movies whilst all cosied up inside. I have a fair few films that I watch year in, year out, with a mix of Christmas classics and a few more recent releases too, and here are five of my favourites.

1. Love Actually

Each year, on Christmas Eve, I settle down in bed to watch Love Actually before going to sleep. I'm not quite sure how this little tradition of mine started, but I've been doing it for nearly 10 years now and don't see myself stopping anytime soon! It's a classic British Christmas with lots of dry humour and a stellar cast, plus there are so many different stories to follow that this emotional roller coaster is sure to suck you in.

2. Nativity

Up until recently, I hadn't actually seen Nativity, but when I noticed it on Netflix I knew I had to give it a watch as my mum absolutely loves it. Much like Love Actually, Nativity is another typical feel-good Christmas film packed with British humour, which is clearly something that appeals to me! Watch as Martin Freeman puts his very own twist on the Nativity, with the pressure of a Hollywood visit on his shoulders, a slightly eccentric teaching assistant and a particularly enthusiastic class as the cast.

3. Elf

I couldn't write this list and not include Elf. Will Ferrell stars as a larger than life elf in possibly one of the most quoted Christmas films about. It's both hilarious and heart-warming, making it a sure-fire way to get yourself feeling festive in time for the big day. I dare you not to sing along.

4. It's A Wonderful Life

In Glasgow, it's a bit of a "thing" to go to the Glasgow Film Theatre and watch Christmas classics like It's A Wonderful Life on the silver screen. There's something about this timeless film that fills my heart with Christmas cheer, it's so sentimental and will quite possibly move you to tears. It's not one of those overly cheesy films that are super happy, but the tale of George realising the value his life has thanks to an angel is absolutely unmissable.

5. Arthur Christmas

Would it really be a round up of my favourite festive films if I didn't include at least one starring Hugh Laurie? Or his voice at least... The cast isn't the only reason I love Arthur Christmas, but it was the inclusion of Hugh Laurie that drew me to it in the first place so it's only right that I mention it! My family and I went to see this at the cinema a few years back now and it's one of those rare films that we all loved. This heart-warming tale of how Santa's son, Arthur, saves Christmas by making sure no one misses out is the perfect film to watch with all of the family. I cried, but I cry at anything and everything.

My love for the city of Glasgow is well known, and Christmas time in Glasgow is no different. The city really shows its best during the festive season and it makes a brilliant place to spend a day or even a weekend. I have so many recommendations of things to do in the city all year round, but after I had a festive day out with Glasgow Loves Christmas at the start of the season – which you can see in my first Vlogmas video – I thought I’d share a quick Christmas rundown of the best spots in the city.

Festive Fashion Picks - Cosy PJs

Christmas Festive Pyjamas Nightwear | Colours and Carousels - Scottish Lifestyle, Beauty and Fashion blog

Christmas PJs are a bit of a tradition for me. I mean, I do spend pretty much 90% of my existence in my pyjamas, so it's probably a bit obvious that I love them. As soon as the end of November hits I bring out the festive patterns and fleecy fabrics to match my cosy duvet and the overall Christmas vibe which I live for. It's perpetually cold at this time of year, so I'm claiming that as my excuse.

It doesn't help that the shops are absolutely jam packed with cosy PJs come Christmas time, meaning I can well and truly indulge my obsession! Each year I add at least one new pair of festive PJs to my collection, if not more, and this year I've got my eye on quite a few pieces in both the more "traditional" colour palette with lots of reds and a slightly icier selection too.

One of the big things on my list this year is a new onesie, as my beloved Dorothy Perkins number has seen much better days after over two years of wear. I love this fluffy cream onesie, but I've also seen a few others that have caught my eye! I'd also quite like a new dressing gown (despite owning far too many as it is) and I'm loving the fur trimmed trend that seems to be hitting the shops this year.

Those fancy mermaid blanket things have been all over social media for weeks now and it feels like just about every shop has their own version this year. There are even Christmas versions! As someone who spends a lot of time chilling on the couch in a pile of blankets, I can't help but be drawn to them. I'm not a huge mermaid fan, but they're still hella cute.

Tipple Box: A Curated Cocktail Experience

As soon as I'm handed a drinks menu, I always flip straight to the cocktail section. I'm one of those people who likes their alcoholic drinks to not really taste like alcohol, so I always prefer a pretty cocktail. Don't get me wrong, I'm also partial to a glass of wine with my dinner, a raspberry gin or a sneaky wee vodka on my rare nights out, but I can't resist the lure of a cocktail.

As well as cocktails, I also love parcels. Between online shopping & subscription boxes, I get a fair few parcels and coming home to lots of boxes to open is always a treat! My two loves have been combined in the shape of the Tipple Box, a lovingly curated selection of craft spirits and mixers all picked with the perfect cocktail in mind. I rarely make cocktails in the house, because although our cabinet is pretty well stocked with spirits, I never really have the rest of the ingredients to match! Now I just need to pick up some fancy glasses to drink them from...

As that annoying Sainsburys advert says, the best gift this Christmas is time. I always feel like I'm running out of time these days, particularly with the busy festive period in full swing, so I'm all for saving time where I can. Although I usually love hitting the shops I've just not been feeling it this year, it just feels busier and more stressful than ever which is not what I need right now. Instead, I'm all about the one-stop shop, where I can get the bulk of my Christmas shopping done in one easy peasy place without having to worry about making all these different orders and keeping track of them. I'll maybe pick up a few stocking fillers out and about, but thanks to the wonderful world of the internet my Christmas shopping is pretty much done and dusted!

One of these aforementioned one-stop shops is Ideal World, the TV shopping channel that is an absolute treasure trove for shoppers. I've raved about their beauty selection before, but now I've delved even deeper to what's on offer I think I'm a little bit hooked. With toys, gadgets, fashion and homewares aplenty there is definitely something for everyone from Ideal World this Christmas. There's even an activity tracker for pets if that's your sort of thing...

Festive Fashion Picks - Christmas Jumpers

Funny Cool Christmas Jumpers 2016 | Colours and Carousels - Scottish Lifestyle, Beauty and Fashion blog

I'm going to hold my hand up and say that my Christmas jumpers have been making a couple of appearances pre-December, but I have a feeling I'm not the only one! Now that December is here (can you believe it?!) I feel like it's a little more justifiable, and I'm already looking at adding some more to my Christmas wardrobe. I've already treated myself to a little Spiced Girls themed number from Boohoo which was an absolute steal and makes me giggle every time I see it, but true to my shopaholic self I've been eyeing up a few more with both pop culture references and in a more traditional style. I do love a wee pop culture reference!

I have to say that the British high street has definitely upped its game when it comes to sassy Christmas jumpers this year, and it's no longer a task and a half to find something both funny and festive. Is it wrong to buy them all? Probably...

Obviously, I had to include a few more traditional festive favourites, of which there are plenty around! With Fairisle prints and sequins abundant, it's unlikely that you'll be stuck for options when it comes to cosy Christmas jumpers for this festive season - the only issue will be deciding which one to wear on the day itself. I'm feeling the Xmas & Chill loungewear set in the morning, followed by a swift change in to something with a bit of sparkle for the day, then a cosy classic for an evening curled up in front of the telly.
