It feels like forever ago that we packed up the car and headed off to visit Highfield Hotel in Keswick, but alas life goes on and it's been back to the same old cycle of work, work, work and more work ever since.

We arrived in a cloudy Keswick on the Monday afternoon after a slightly rainy drive down from Glasgow and after a quick change set off to explore the town centre. The rain didn't hold off for long and we'd barely even reached the front door before the downpour started, so first up on our list of priorities was finding a cosy little pub to hole up in with some good ol' lunch. We ended up in the Lake Road Inn, where we sheltered from the rain with a pint and some cosy comfort food. When the rain started to die off we ventured back outside to see what the rest of the town had to offer, ducking in to shops to hide from the intermittent showers and browse the cute little souvenirs and trinkets on offer.

Keswick is a small town packed with lots of little winding streets hiding some gems and despite the rain it was packed full of walkers and their accompanying pups, so we spent quite a lot of our time in the town enjoying a spot of dog watching. It didn't help that I'd injured my foot a couple of days prior to our trip and was in need of frequent rest stops, but it made for a more chilled out trip overall.

After a spot of shopping, well more browsing in my case for a change, we headed back to the hotel for a nap before getting ready for our meal. You can read more about the incredible food in my previous review, but the long and short of it is that it was amazing. I was thoroughly full up by the time I rolled in to bed ready for another afternoon of exploring the next day.

Much to our delight it was surprisingly dry on the Tuesday, despite some threatening clouds, so we decided to take a wander over to the water and see what was going on there. The shore was just a short walk from our hotel so we set off quite early when it was still nice and quiet, and had a peaceful couple of hours wandering around watching the ducks on the water. As we started to head back towards the town centre for lunch it was getting quite busy with crowds of walkers gearing up to start their treks that day so I think we timed it perfectly!

Our lunch spot of choice was the bright and airy window seat at Magnolia Bar & Bistro, where we devoured huge paninis whilst watching the world (and their dogs) walk by. It was surprisingly quiet considering how tasty the food was, but I think it gets a whole lot busier at night with their live music line up and array of beers from around the world. It was just what we needed to set us up for the long journey home.

By this point the rain was starting to draw closer, so after grabbing an ice cream we started to head back towards the car to start our journey home. We decided to stop off at the Castlerigg Stone Circle on our way, as we were passing by it anyway, which gave amazing views over the valley down to the water.

And with that our little break was over, short but sweet, and very much needed.
