Recently Reading: Doctor Sleep by Stephen King

Doctor Sleep (aka The Shining Part 2) by Stephen King - available on Amazon
I would definitely include The Shining as one of my favourite books of all time so it's safe to say I was pretty excited for the 'sequel' which was released at the end of September.

Doctor Sleep follows Danny Torrance and his life as an adult after the events of his stay at The Overlook Hotel. Danny isn't the only main character in this book as it also follows the path of the 'True Knot' and a very special child called Abra.

For me, Doctor Sleep answers a lot of questions left after reading The Shining - for example it goes further in to explaining what said 'shining' actually is. Personally, I'm not really seeing this as a sequel, as if you have read Stephen King's work previously you may know that he often makes reference to events that have happened in other books. For example, a lot of his books are set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, and many characters are imprisoned in the infamous Shawshank Prison.

Despite not serving it's purpose as a sequel as such I still found it to be a very enjoyable book, it's not my favourite of his but it was just as gripping as King's previous work and had me desperate to get to the end. If you're a fan of Stephen King I would wholeheartedly recommend this, especially if like me you have read and loved The Shining. Word of warning though, if you've not read the book and only seen the film adaptation then you might be a bit confused as the book has a fair few differences (I'll leave it at that).

If you want to keep up with what I'm reading (when I remember to update it) you can add me on Goodreads here.

  1. I really want to read it as I recently read The Shining but I want it to be related. I don't want to end up disappointed.

It means so much to me that people take the time to comment, and I really appreciate each and every one. I try to reply to all of them but I am pretty forgetful, so if you have a burning question that you would like me to answer please drop me a tweet @colourscarousel or email me!
